Develop your social work practice
We do not currently fund development programmes for the practitioner career stage.
As a child and family social work practitioner, you need to do continuing professional development (CPD).
CPD is the process of improving your professional skills and knowledge through ongoing learning.
It will help improve your practice so you can provide the best possible support to children and families.
Types of CPD
CPD can be any activity you feel would benefit you and improve your current or future practice, including:
- training courses
- learning achieved as part of a formal qualification or certification
- activity from your day-to-day role
- reflecting on work practices through supervision
- researching new techniques
- attending a relevant conference, seminar or event
- reading or contributing to a sector-related article
Speak to your manager or workforce development team about the CPD opportunities available to you in your local authority.

Record your CPD
You need to record your CPD to renew your registration with Social Work England.
You must record at least 2 pieces of CPD, including at least one with a peer reflection. This means that you’ve discussed your CPD activity with a peer, your manager or another social work professional.
Record your CPD in your Social Work England online account.
You must do this by midnight on 30 November every year.
